Champion’s Mission

Work with partners and customers to raise environmental awareness, develop innovative solutions and establish best practices in the events industry in an effort to:

  • Reduce energy consumption and waste
  • Reuse inventory, and graphics
  • Use recyclable products/recycle
  • Use products that contain post-consumer content

Here are some of Champion’s current green initiatives

  • Exhibitor kits are available online; any binders mailed are made from 3% post-consumer recovered fiber and recycled paper, printed two-sided (offer print publication on request-only basis)
  • Exhibitor kits are also available on CD-ROM. This option saves over 200 pages of paper and .5 kilowatts per kit
  • We have made a substantial investment in advanced flatbed printing technology by VUTEk. These printers allow us to produce high quality signage without laminate or glues, thereby reducing non-recyclable plastic product and energy consumption by 33%. It should also be noted that the VUTEks print on a number of different recyclable substrates such as cardboard
  • Tabletop covers pre-cut to length to minimize waste (relative to width and length). We have also been testing biodegradable plastic alternative for signage, drape and other coverings (such as muslin and organic materials)
  • Our aluminum system components are continually reused and recycled into new system components when worn
  • Substrates are reused/reprinted when possible
  • We purchase carpeting with recycled content
  • Champion's national floor covering inventory and recycling programs are managed through its carpet depots in Atlanta and Las Vegas. Champion has selected recycling partners that participate in the joint industry-government Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) program in order to help increase the amount of recycling and reuse of post-consumer carpet, and to reduce the amount of waste carpet being sent to landfills. Champion Recycling in Kentucky, recycles the worn carpeting and manufactures the raw goods into PVC piping and septic tanks.
  • Our carpet padding is made from 95% recycled urethane (material from chairs and car seats). It is CRI "Green Label" certified, meeting LEED low emission requirements. We use 20-30 times then continue to use as packing material
  • We use environmentally friendly Orange Magic™ carpet cleaners and shampoos. These products meet Green Seal's environmental standard for industrial cleaners based on its reduced human and aquatic toxicity and reduced smog production potential
  • We use organic muslin or velour drapery where possible
  • Counters, kiosks and demo units remain assembled and are fitted with graphic inserts
  • Energy Star approved counter lighting ballasts and bulbs reduce energy consumption by 30%
  • We offer cardboard wastebaskets & biodegradable trash can liners
  • We use only hand carts and propane fork lifts for moving freight

Show Site Procedures

  • Offer recycling programs for convention bags, reuse or donate
  • Minimize energy use by turning down/off lighting and air conditioning during exhibit move-in and move-out
  • Turn off lights and air conditioning in unused meeting space
  • Utilize convention center’s recycling program (Material Recovery Facility) to sort and to recycle non-food waste (paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, plastic materials, etc.)
  • Utilize recycling bins (bottles and cans) within the building; confirm collection points

Office Procedures

  • Electronic internal & external workflow systems greatly reduce need for printed documents
  • Use paper products with post-consumer content, print double-sided, recycle
  • Use Energy Star rated office equipment and lighting

In addition, with over 1,000,000 square feet of warehouse space, Champion has reached out to companies such as Sun Edison and the American Wind Energy Association to research the feasibility of using alternative energies in and for our offices. We believe by implementing renewable energy solutions we can reduce our annual NOX emissions by 7.5 tons, SO2 emissions by 10.5 tons, CO2 emissions by 1,800 tons. These reductions would represent the equivalent annual energy consumption of 1,500 US homes.
